January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month, and eye-health organizations are encouraging the public to educate itself about the disease and to make a New Year’s resolution to make eye health a priority.

More than 2.2 million Americans aged 40 years or older have open-angle glaucoma, the most common form of the disease, and at least 50% of them don’t know they have it.

Some glaucoma-related resources to share with patients:

• Prevent Blindness America’s Glaucoma Learning Center Web site, www.preventblindness.org/glaucoma, includes general information and information about treatment options, a place to request a free booklet about what to expect during treatment, a list of questions to ask an eye-care professional, and a discussion forum for patients and caregivers.

• The Glaucoma Research Foundation’s Web site, www.glaucoma.org, has information about the disease and includes a page where visitors can request a free brochure.

• The Glaucoma Foundation, the Alliance for Aging Research, and Merck have created the Take on Glaucoma Web site, at www.takeonglaucoma.com, to educate Americans about the disease and its management.

• Information about glaucoma is available from the National Eye Institute at www.nei.nih.gov/health/glaucoma.

• Details about the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Vision Health Initiative and strategies for prevention and control of common eye diseases, including glaucoma, are available at www.cdc.gov/visionhealth.

Did you know…

Did you know, that if your sunglasses don’t have a good ultraviolet filter you could be damaging your eyes.  Ultraviolet light has been linked to causing Cataracts in not only the elderly but also the very young over long term exposure.
